Loughborough University

March 23, 2012

Revise have worked closely with Loughborough University on a number of key sustainability projects since 2009, to help the University drive strategic and operational improvements in its sustainability performance and to help meet requirements within their EcoCampus Environmental Management System (EMS).

These projects have included:

+   A Waste Management Audit, undertaken in November 2009, comprised a comprehensive assessment of the University’s waste management practices, waste arisings, legal requirements and contractor performance and costs.  The Audit was used to help the University develop its Waste Strategy and achieve full compliance and best practice with its management systems.

+   The provision of CIWM (Chartered Institute of Wastes Management) best practice waste management training in March 2010.  Revise developed and delivered the bespoke training to approximately 40 key staff at the University with waste and resource management responsibilities, to embed knowledge and communicate the University’s legal requirements and strategic waste objectives and aspirations.

+   An Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey for Burleigh and Holywell Woodlands, undertaken in May 2010, which comprised a detailed survey of habitats and biodiversity within two ancient woodlands owned by the University and located adjacent to their campus.  The project was undertaken to provide key actions as part of the University’s wider biodiversity management and conservation objectives, and to contribute to the development of their Biodiversity Action Plan.

+   A Scoping Study on Waste Management Providers and Waste Infrastructure, undertaken in June 2010, to identify potential waste management service providers which could be considered by the Loughborough University and University of Leicester Consortium for the retendering and award of their new waste management contract.  The project was used to successfully prepare the consortium for their waste management contract retender, enabling high performance specifications and targets to be agreed.

+   A Bioaerosol Risk Assessment, undertaken in July 2010.  This risk assessment was undertaken by Revise in partnership with PJD Consultants to support an application by the University for a Paragraph 12 Exemption for the storage and composting of biodegradable waste

+   An Emissions and Discharges Audit, undertaken in November 2011, to identify activities at the University which produces emissions to air and discharges to water and land.  The project was used to identify relevant environmental legislation and to assess the University’s compliance, in addition to reviewing existing practices, procedures and management systems in line with the requirements of the EcoCampus Environmental Management System.

“Universities are often complex organisations and Revise provides a flexible and thorough approach to auditing. Understanding the nature of these institutions and the range of staff that work within them is important when obtaining key information on processes and procedures. Colleagues responded well to the team. Timescales were met and the service provided was professional and good value.”

Jo Hasbury, Sustainability Manager at Loughborough University
